MISSION STATEMENT
TURNPIKE WESLEYAN CHURCH
WE BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, WHO IS GOD THE FATHER, GOD THE SON, AND GOD
THE HOLY SPIRIT.
WE BELIEVE THAT THE BIBLE IS THE INSPIRED WORD OF GOD.
WE BELIEVE THAT GOD WAS INCARNATED ON EARTH THROUGH THE VIRGIN
MARY, GATHERED DISCIPLES, AND WAS CRUCIFIED AS A SACRIFICE FOR SIN.
WE BELIEVE THAT HE AROSE FROM THE DEAD ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN, AND
LIVES TODAY.
WE BELIEVE THAT THROUGH OUR CONFESSION OF SIN AND ACCEPTANCE OF
CHRIST, A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP (AN INVITING OF GOD TO LIVE WITHIN US) IS DEVELOPED.
WE ALSO BELIEVE THAT THIS ACCEPTANCE IS LIFE CHANGING, RESULTING
IN PEACE AND COMPLETENESS LIKE NO OTHER.
OUR MISSION IS TO SHARE THESE BELIEFS WITH OTHERS.
The Wesleyan Church believes in justfication by faith in Jesus Christ's shed
blood and in the need for Christians to live and proclain scriptural
holiness. This belief is in complete accordance with the Catholic and
Arminian influences on the Anglican Church of England, where John and Charles
Wesley were reared. Also, Peter Boehler of the Moravian Church greatly
inspired John Wesley's spirit for a deeper Christian walk of holiness. The
Wesleyan Church's original name was Methodist Church , a name that was given
to a Bible study club of students from Oxford, and of which John and Charles
Wesley were members. The name Methodist was given this group because of
their methodical study of scripture. This group sought after holiness of
heart and of life. John and Charles Wesley acquired this state of grace
after attending a religious society in Aldersgate Street where the leader
was reading Luther's preface to Romans. John Wesley said of that
experience, " I felt my heart strangely warmed " as the indwelling Holy Ghost
moved upon his spirit. Wesleyans believe after a person's initial repentance
and conversion that the spiritual infant must grow into a spiritually
mature adult. This growth can only be accomplished by the indwelling Holy Spirit, as
the life of the believer is turned over to the Holy Spirit's control. That is
what " heart holiness " is . Methodism came to America at New York, NY in
1760 and experinced great growth. Names of the movement have been Methodist
Church, Methodist Episcopal Church, Wesleyan Methodist Connection and in
1968 Wesleyan Methodist and Pilgrim Holiness churches merged and became
The Wesleyan Church.
